Quick facts: In Tokyo, the yellow ginkgo trees are forecast to turn by November 26, and the red maples by November 28. Late November to early December is the best time to go. You don’t need to leave the city, either: all four spots below are on the subway.
1. Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue
This is Tokyo’s most famous autumn photo. Long rows of ginkgo trees form a golden tunnel, and the avenue is open all day for free. Weathernews expects it to look its best from around November 29. Gaienmae Station on the Ginza Line is the closest stop, so it’s an easy trip from our Shibuya and Akasaka apartments.

2. Rikugien Garden
Rikugien is a Japanese garden around 300 years old, with maple and ginkgo trees across its grounds. Its evening light-up runs from November 25 to December 6, from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost ¥1,000 in advance or ¥1,200 on the day. Use the Main Gate for night visits. The garden is near Komagome Station, and so is our Modern Furnished Apartment in Komagome, from ¥140,000 per month.

3. Koishikawa Korakuen
For an earlier light-up, Koishikawa Korakuen opens at night from November 13 to 24. Prices are the same as Rikugien’s. Since the two events don’t overlap, you can easily see both. The garden is near Korakuen Station on the Namboku Line, a direct ride from our Minami Azabu apartments.

4. Shinjuku Gyoen
Finally, Shinjuku Gyoen is a large mix of gardens and is usually the last to peak, around December 5. A good route is Shinjuku Gyoen in the morning, then the Gaien ginkgo avenue, then lunch in Omotesando. Our Cozy 1BR apartment in Shinjuku starts from ¥230,000 per month.
