Quick facts: Autumn is the best season for onsen in Japan. The air is crisp, the leaves turn red, and a hot bath feels better than it does in summer. You don’t need a car for any of these three. One is inside Tokyo, and the other two are around 80–90 minutes away by limited express train.
1. Spa LaQua, Tokyo Dome City (no day trip needed)
Spa LaQua is one of the few natural hot spring facilities in central Tokyo. Its water comes from 1,700 metres underground. In addition, the signs explain bathing etiquette in several languages, which makes it a gentle first onsen for newcomers. It’s a one-minute walk from Korakuen Station on the Namboku and Marunouchi lines. As a result, it’s a direct ride from our Minami Azabu and Motoazabu apartments on the Namboku Line.

2. Hakone (the classic)
Hakone is Tokyo’s favourite onsen escape. The Odakyu Romancecar runs direct from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, and every seat is reserved. For day visitors, Tenzan is a short bus ride from the station and has a forest setting that most city spas can’t match. Visit in November for the autumn leaves. From our Shibuya apartments, Shinjuku is just a few minutes away.
3. Chichibu (the easy escape)
For mountain views with fewer crowds, take Seibu’s yellow Laview from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu. The trip takes about 80 minutes, through countryside the whole way. Best of all, Matsuri no Yu sits right next to the station. It has four types of open-air bath and six indoor baths. The Laview also stops at Tokorozawa, so guests at our Ikebukuro and Tokorozawa apartments are already on the line.
